Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bates and Lieutenant H. Jay Cullen gave the ultimate sacrifice on August 12, 2017, after their surveillance helicopter crashed in a wooded area. Both men died at the scene.

The newly dedicated 'Trooper-Pilot Berke Bates' helipad is located at the Virginia State Police HQ in Chesterfield County.

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, Former Governor Terry McAuliffe, Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security Brian Moran and Deputy Secretary of PSHS were at the dedication ceremony.

According to WRIC, a Virginia State Police aviation hangar was dedicated to the second Lieutenant H. Jay Cullen in February.
