NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A fire damaged part of the TFC Recycling facility in Newport News on Monday afternoon, but no one was hurt, officials said.

The Newport News Fire Department responded to the facility, located at 5602 Chestnut Avenue, shortly after 12:30 p.m.

Heavy fire and smoke were coming from the building when firefighters got there. The Newport News Fire Department upgraded its response to two alarms due to the fire's size and the amount of recycling materials inside.

According to the Newport News Fire Marshal’s Office, firefighters quickly attacked the fire from the inside and contained it to the area of origin. Crews marked the fire under control at 12:52 p.m., but a piece of heavy equipment, cardboard, and other recycling materials were damaged.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. Chestnut Avenue was briefly closed in both directions and has since been reopened.

There are no environmental concerns as a result of the fire, according to the Fire Marshal’s Office.
