Police fear gang retaliation following deaths of NN teens

Police say the 13-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy were shot on W. 25th Street Monday, April 6, 2015.
Jada Richardson, 13, of Hampton and 17-year-old Stantiago Davis Jr. of Newport News were shot to death Tuesday.

NEWPORT NEWS -- Two teenagers in Newport News were killed late Monday and now police warn of gang retaliation.

Police said the shooting was reported around 10:25 p.m. in the 800 block of W 25th Street. They found 13-year-old Jada Richardson of Hampton and 17-year-old Domingo Santiago Davis Jr. of Newport News dead from gunshot wounds.

Police said the two were attending a birthday party when the incident occurred.

Due to Davis' criminal history, police believe gang violence played a part in the homicides.

Police Chief Richard W. Myers said in a press conference Tuesday afternoon that the shootings could have been a retaliatory act and there could be more retaliation to follow.

Investigators also found bullet holes in a red truck and a white sedan parked on the street.

Chief Myers said the people police spoke to at the scene were "unruly and uncooperative."

"Those who think police can solve violent crime alone are naive and quite frankly wrong," Myers said.

"I want to reach out to everybody. If you got any answers, any answers, anywhere, about anything, about my niece's killing, please, please contact the detective or her family because we are hurting over here," Jada's aunt Shoten Howard said.

Chief Myers said a curfew check will go into effect Thursday in the southeast section of Newport News.

"Each night between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. officers will focus additional efforts looking for juveniles violating the City's curfew law," Myers said.

Newport News has a curfew law that states in part:

(d) It shall be unlawful for any person under the age of fourteen (14) years to be present on any street, road, alley, avenue, park or other public place in the city, or in any vehicle operating or parked thereon, between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., unless accompanied by his/her parent or guardian...

(e) It shall be unlawful for any person over the age of thirteen (13) years but under the age of eighteen (18) years to be present on any street, road, alley, avenue, park or other public place in the city, or in any vehicle operating or parked thereon, between the hours of 12:01 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., unless accompanied by his/her parent or guardian...

(f) It shall be unlawful for any parent or guardian of any minor to permit, allow or encourage such minor to be present on any street, road, alley, avenue, park or other public place in the city, or in any vehicle operating or parked thereon, in violation of provisions of subsections (d) or (e) of this section.

Myers said there is no suspect information at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
