Stricter curfew requirements for minors in Newport News

The city's new curfew requires unaccompanied minors younger than 18 to be inside by 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and by 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - Juveniles in Newport News will soon face a stricter curfew.

The Daily Press reports the city's new curfew requires unaccompanied minors younger than 18 to be inside by 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and by 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

The old curfew allowed those between 14 and 17 to be out until midnight.

Officials hope the curfew change will help cut down on the recent youth and gang violence that has occurred in the city this year.

During spring break, a 13-year-old and a 17-year-old were shot and killed in the city at about 10:30 p.m. on a Monday.

The curfew applies to any public place, including a vehicle, unless the juvenile is accompanied by a parent or guardian. Changes will go into effect on June 5.
