According to VDOT the crash closed all east lanes on I-264 heading onto the downtown tunnel. Lanes have reopened and traffic is flowing.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Multiple riders aboard a Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) bus are in the hospital following a crash in the Downtown Tunnel in Portsmouth Wednesday morning, according to the Virginia State Police (VSP).

The crash happened on Interstate 264 Eastbound just before 9 a.m., VSP said. Police have not said what led up to the crash or if any other vehicles were involved.

A spokesperson from HRT confirmed that nine passengers and the operator were on board the bus at the time of the crash. The condition of the passengers hospitalized has not been released, however.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) said the crash closed all east lanes but lanes have since reopened and traffic is flowing.

The investigation is ongoing.
