Our History in Hampton Roads

Our story began on September 19, 1953 with our first broadcast signal on UHF channel 15. We were the NBC affiliate for Hampton Roads then. The station originally was headquartered in Hampton, which remains the station's city of license. Thomas P. Chisman, a Hampton businessman, led our first ownership group.

In 1959, the station switched from UHF to VHF and from channel 15 to channel 13. That same year, the station switched from an NBC affiliate to and ABC affiliate.

In 1980, the local ownership group sold the station to Corinthian Broadcasting, a subsidiary of the Dun and Bradstreet company. In 1984, Belo purchased Corinthian. In late 2013, Gannett purchased Belo. In 2015, Gannett spun off its broadcast and digital properties from its publishing properties, and 13News Now (WVEC) became part of the newly formed TEGNA Media, one of the largest, most geographically diverse broadcasting and digital media companies in the U.S.
