Pet care in the high heat

The Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center offers ways to keep your pooch healthy and happy in the heat.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- With rising temperatures, dogs sure do love splashing around in the water. However, what's not good for them is to get a heat-related injury. The Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center offers ways to keep your pooch healthy and happy in the heat.

Bureau manager Barbara Hays says pet owners should be mindful when taking their dog outside.

"Hot pavement can give them third degree burns on their paws. Even going to the beach, that hot sand can burn their feet so quickly," said Hays.

It's important to adjust the time of day in which you and your furry friend go out.

"First thing in the morning before the heat of the day, or after sundown is the best time to take them out. If you're out with your dog, be in shady areas, provide plenty of good, fresh water for them," added Hayes. It's also a good idea to limit the amount of time outside.

When out for your walk, keep an eye on how your dog is acting.

"Excessive panting, drooling, they'll become dazed and confused and sometimes they will even collapse, and that is an emergency," she said. Plus, while it should go without saying, never leave your dog in the car.
