Getting your car ready for hot weather

It's important to make sure your car is properly maintained so you don't have any problems.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- As the temperature heats up, so does your car. It's important to make sure your car is properly maintained so you don't have any problems.

"As the summer months come along, we start to see overheating concerns on cars due to the high temperatures outside," said Richard Quinn, lead technician at Ward's Corner Shell in Norfolk.

"The best thing to do in these hot months is to make sure when you first get in the car, put it on the fresh air setting, roll your windows down and drive for about a minute or two to allow the ac to dissipate the heat out of the vehicle, and then you can roll the windows up, put it on re-circulation and you can get it cold enough to hang meat in the car," he said.

He says it's a good idea to have your car serviced on a regular basis.

"You want to make sure that all your fluids are topped off, you have the proper mixture of coolant to water in your vehicle," said Quinn.

If you notice your air conditioning is not as cold as usual, it's probably a good idea to get that looked at.

"Usually what it is, if the car is not cooling properly, it doesn't have the proper charge on the cooling system. The cooling system relies on a high-pressure, low-pressure differential system to be able to create the cold air inside the cab," said Quinn.

He says air filters should also be changed yearly to help keep the pollen out.
