Do you own a $2 bill? It could be worth thousands

Crack open those old piggy banks and dig into an old couch, because you may be able to cash big time — and it’ll only cost you $2.

NORFOLK, Va. — Could you be sitting on a big chunk of change? You might want to check your wallets for an old $2 bill.

If you have any lying around, they could be worth thousands of dollars.

The $2 variety was printed for the first time in 1862, and after a brief hiatus in the 1960s, they returned in 1976.

Thought to cause bad luck, they became an unpopular option for many consumers at the time.

Today, however, they could become a good luck charm for many.

The U.S. Currency Auctions "Online Auction" estimates that uncirculated $2 bills from nearly every year up to 1917 are worth at least $1,000.

Several things can add value to your $2 bill, like a lower serial number. You should also check the color of the seal to the right of Thomas Jefferson — bills with red seals sell for up to $2,500.

While the older bills are certainly hot items for collectors, even newer editions can bring in some dough. A $2 bill from 2003 sold at auction for $2,400 thanks to its low serial number.

Though rare, there are still more than a billion dollars worth of $2 bills in circulation, according to the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The Bureau of Printing and Engraving has printed them as recently as 2022.

So, crack open those old piggy banks and dig into an old couch, because you may be able to cash big time — and it’ll only cost you $2.
