Need help filing taxes? CNU students are offering free tax prep

For residents seeking assistance filing taxes this year, CNU students can help free of charge.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Tax season is here, and even though many Americans are dreading the process there is some good news for Hampton Roads residents. If you haven't filed your taxes yet, you can get tax prep help for free.

Students with Christopher Newport University's (CNU) Luter School of Business are helping the community complete their tax returns free of charge. The service is offered on a first come, first served basis and anyone who makes $70,000 or less is eligible.

Through the IRS-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, student volunteers are trained as tax preparers and are certified to prepare basic tax returns.

If you are interested in this service,  you can find a list of the documents you must bring on CNU's website

You can head to the storefront at 9 Hidenwood Shopping Center every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until April 17. They are closed the first week of March during spring break.
