Long lines form outside Hampton IRS as people scramble to file taxes

Tax day is April 15, and those who miss the deadline could face severe penalties.

HAMPTON, Va. — In a last-ditch effort to give people the assistance they need, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) held a same-day appointment event. Dozens of people showed up outside the Hampton office, and many waited in long lines to be seen.

"I tried to get here at around 7 o'clock but I got delayed, looks like I'm going to be here for a while," said Rodney Orlando Barnes.

The IRS noted that because appointments aren’t necessary for these special Saturday hours, some locations may see high demand and wait times can be longer than usual.

Melanie Lee, a manager with the Hampton branch, said they are doing their best to keep up with the amount of people.

"A lot of people need help right now so we are doing the best we can, and trying to get everyone organized, especially for the people who may be missing some key documents," said Lee.

For those who need the services of the IRS, it's important to bring all the necessary papers. If not, you could be forced to make a return trip home in order to get those papers as it can be difficult for representatives to help

This includes:

  • Current government-issued photo identification, along with a second form of identification for identity verification services.
  • Social Security or Individual Taxpayer Identification numbers for themselves and all members of their household, including their spouse and dependents (if applicable).
  • Any IRS letters or notices received and related documents.
  • A copy or digital image of the tax return in question if one was filed.

Lee said the event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 13. However, those who miss it are encouraged to call or go online to schedule an appointment. To make an appointment, call 844-545-5640.
