HAMPTON -- By the end of the year, Buckroe Beach will look like the beach residents have come to expect.

The last phase of three-quarters-of-a-million dollar sand replenishment project got underway Wednesday.

'I think it's money well spent,' said resident Joe Stellute.

The city requested 150,000 cubic yards of sand to replace the beach that was washed away in storms dating back into 2009. Since the November Nor'Easter, Buckroe Beach hasn't looked the same. Sand dunes were moved out into the street.

Sand is being added from the southern end of the beach at Pilot Avenue to the observation pier.

The project began in March and should be finished by December 30, city officials said.

Next week, a contractor will put down matting to keep the heavy equipment from damaging the boardwalk. The following week, more sand will be trucked in.
