CHKD offers services for mothers dealing with anxiety and depression

Out of 1 in 5 moms or moms-to-be are affected by anxiety and depression during pregnancy or the first year after childbirth.

NORFOLK, Va. — Mothers experiencing Postpartum Disorder and Anxiety disorder have many support services offered by the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters.

Signs of the illnesses include “Baby Blues”, which is very common entails a two week period of mood instability, frequent crying and feelings of sadness.

If any moms are experiencing these feelings CHKD Clinical Social Worker, Denise Williford, of Mental Health Services says it is very important to tackle the issue. These symptoms interfere with the joy of motherhood and can lead to difficulties with mom-infant and mom-partner relationships.

Notify your OBGYN, baby’s pediatrician, or family physician how you are feeling and schedule an appointment.

CHKD has a support group called Healthy Mommy Healthy Baby that hold different meetings are every month. NICU Moms meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 12:30p.m. and all moms meet on the third Wednesday of every month at 6 p.m.

This give moms a chance to meet other moms, learn coping skills, and identify resources.

Postpartum support Virginia books and online resources are also available.

This all leads to the path to wellness with a combination of self-care, social support, talk therapy, medications prescribed by physician.
