NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- For those who surf the web and either sell items or make purchases online, the Newport News Police Department wants to offer a safe space for people to conduct person-to-person transactions.
The department has launched what's called a "Safe Exchange Zone." It's a public space located at the Newport News Police Headquarters where online shoppers can meet sellers/vendors to pick up items they purchased on the internet.
It's a great alternative to meeting up at a stranger's home or other location that might not be safe.
Police have set up two designated parking spaces in front of the headquarters where you can conduct a safe exchange with 24-hour surveillance.
However, transactions should be made anywhere between the hours of 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. every day.
The two spaces are meant to facilitate person-to-person transactions and it is prohibited to leave property unattended.
