Divers search waterways near Colonial Parkway, but no new evidence of 1980s murders found

The dives followed up on new info obtained by investigators after Alan Wilmer Sr. was identified as a suspect in the 1987 deaths of David Knobling and Robin Edwards.

YORK COUNTY, Va. — Virginia State Police (VSP) said divers searched waterways near the Colonial Parkway Tuesday morning but didn't find any new evidence of the infamous 1980s murders in the area.

According to a spokesperson, the dives were a follow-up to new information obtained by investigators after authorities publically identified Alan Wilmer Sr. as a suspect in the 1987 deaths of David Knobling, 20, and Robin Edwards, 14, along the parkway.

Wilmer was also named a suspect in the 1989 murder of 29-year-old Teresa Lynn Spaw Howell in Hampton.

VSP focused its search on Tuesday along a creek in York County. Along with VSP, Chesapeake police, Hampton police, Suffolk police and the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) helped with the search.

The VSP spokesperson said the dives were also conducted "due to the ongoing construction along the parkway."

The construction is part of a multi-year project that includes rehabilitating 10 miles of parkway and 11 bridges, along with replacing two bridge decks. It also included repairs to the Williamsburg Tunnel and rehabilitating the stormwater drainage systems. In August 2023, the National Park Service officials said the project was expected to be complete by the end of June 2026.

Authorities are continuing to seek information related to Wilmer and any crimes connected to him. Anyone with information that can help investigators can contact the FBI by calling 1-888-CALL-FBI or submitting a tip through an online portal.
