ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — A 20-year-old man was arrested in Elizabeth City on Tuesday, weeks after he allegedly shot toward someone inside a vehicle.

Rontrez Coleman was brought into custody on charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury and discharging a weapon into an occupied vehicle.

The charges stem from March 7 when the Elizabeth City Police Department responded to a report of shots fired near the corner of Factory and Richardson streets, just off Highway 17.

Responding officers discovered multiple shell casings and a vehicle riddled with bullet holes.

Police did not say what prompted the shooting or if Coleman knew the person or persons inside the vehicle.

Coleman was booked into Albemarle District Jail and is expected to appear in court on Thursday.

This investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on the case is urged to call the police department at 252-335-4321 or the Elizabeth City Crime Line at 252-335-5555.
