Second victim dies in Portsmouth shooting that hospitalized 4

The other two victims remain hospitalized, police said.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Nearly a week after four people were shot in Portsmouth, authorities on Monday announced a second victim has died from their injuries.

Earl Martin Sr. 42, succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, Portsmouth police said. His death follows 18-year-old Ameerah Green's death who was shot the same night.

"I understand that she was getting out of high school and she had a full-ride scholarship," said Ramon Tejada, a neighbor.

The shooting happened on Greenway Court East and Rodman Avenue just before 10 p.m. on Jan. 9. Police found four gunshot victims who were all rushed to the hospital.

Portsmouth Police did not indicate what led up to the shooting, but neighbors told 13News Now they heard a loud argument followed by a series of gunshots.

"There were people on the floor, he was screaming out from his injury," said Prince Brown. "My instinct was to go help, but my lady said 'Come back, the shooting could still be happening.'"

Investigators said a fourth victim took himself to the hospital after he was shot, and detectives believe all four are connected to the same shooting.

The other two victims are still receiving treatment at the hospital, police said.

Those living in the neighborhood say they have never seen violence quite like this, and they grieve the lives lost.

"It's always the innocent people," said Tejada. "These criminals they just make out, they are not the ones getting hurt."

Law enforcement is still searching for 37-year-old Holly Berry, who they say is a person of interest. Police have not said how Berry is connected to the shooting.
