Suspect sought after gunfire exchange with Newport News detectives

Detectives followed a wanted subject into Hampton when the suspect fired their gun, prompting authorities to fire back.

HAMPTON, Va. — A search is underway for a suspect who exchanged gunfire with Newport News detectives Monday night, the Hampton Police Division (HPD) announced.

The detectives followed a wanted subject into Hampton city limits when the suspect stepped out of their vehicle on Patrick Street near Owen and Thomas streets at around 10:20 p.m. That's when authorities say the suspect shot toward the detectives, prompting them to fire back.

The police unit was hit multiple times during the exchange, however, HPD said the detectives were not injured.

The suspect then fled the scene. Authorities have not identified the suspect or said why they were wanted.

A short time later, authorities were alerted that a 19-year-old man with a gunshot wound showed up at Sentara CarePlex.

At this time, police said it's not clear if the two incidents are connected but an investigation is underway. HPD's Major Crime Units is leading both investigations.

Anyone with information on either case is urged to call HPD at 757–727–6111 or leave an anonymous tip at 1-888-562-5887.
