VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A 56-year-old man was sentenced on Monday to nearly 40 years behind bars for the "brutal attack" of his former girlfriend in Virginia Beach, according to the city's Commonwealth's Attorney Colin Stolle.

Jerry Daisey's 36-year prison sentence was determined based on his guilty plea of statutory burglary, abduction, strangulation, and assault and battery of a family member charges from July 30, 2022.

Stolle said Daisey's sentence "greatly exceeds" the Virginia State Sentencing Guidelines for his charges, which recommends a maximum of six years and seven months.

On the night of the incident, Daisey showed up at his former girlfriend's home in Virginia Beach.

Once inside, officials say Daisey grabbed the victim by her hair, punched her several times and held her against her bed while threatening to kill her and her dog. Daisey eventually let the victim get water from the kitchen where he snatched a knife and continued hitting her.

"He told her if she did not go back upstairs with him, he would knock her out.  She was held against her will for several hours," the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney said in a release. "Eventually Daisey calmed down, changed out of his bloody shirt, and left the house."

The victim endured a broken nose, bruised ribs, petechiae of the eyes due to the strangulation, and numerous bruises, according to a release.
