Dare County Sheriff warns of ongoing phone scam

DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WVEC) -- The Dare County Sheriff is warning about an ongoing phone scam.

People have been receiving phone calls from a local number asking for a pin number or social security number. Usually, the caller is asked to either type the information into the phone or say it.

The Sheriff, J.D. "Doug Doughtie, is reminding people not to give out personal information like addresses, date of birth, pin number, or social security number over the phone.

Legitimate companies will not ask for information over email or text messages. Do not reply or click on any links.

If anyone is a victim of identity theft, they are encouraged to contact their local law enforcement officials.
