NORFOLK, Va. — The military is trying to make life on base easier for families.

The Defense Department (DoD) is expanding its free universal pre-kindergarten program, bringing it to nearly all primary schools on U.S.-run bases across the globe.

80 bases should have the services up and running this fall for the 2024-25 school year. The remaining bases will get the program over the next several years, while new facilities are built and renovated.

According to the DoD, the benefits for military-connected students include preparation for education success, learning social-emotional skills, better cognitive outcomes, cost-savings in the long run, closing the achievement gap between children from different backgrounds and enhanced family engagement.
