NORFOLK, Va. — American Heart Association members are talking about the importance of American Heart Month.

Aaron Thompson and Ashford Denman, members of the American Heart Association of Hampton Roads, talked about the importance of American Heart Month with 13News Now's Bethany Reese for Wellness Wednesday.

“We’re focusing on the fact that cardiovascular disease is the number killer of both men and women," Thompson said. “The American Heart Association is determined to make sure people are cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillators (AED) aware, a nation of lifesavers.”

The initiative aims to turn bystanders into lifesavers by educating people on how to improve CPR and AED.

National American Heart ambassador and Buffalo Bills safety, Damar Hamlin, spent time demonstrating hands-on CPR at the Super Bowl.

By 2030, it is the American Heart Association's goal to decrease cardiac arrest by 50%.

This year is the 20th anniversary of Go Red for Women and the 100th anniversary of The American Heart Association.
