Students in Norfolk talk to students in China affected by coronavirus

Students at the Academy for International Studies at Rosemont had a video chat with students in China. It was to help them understand the impact of COVID-19.

NORFOLK, Va. — They may not speak the same language as students in Norfolk, but the smiles and laughs of students in China who were on a video chat showed they share a similar passion for people and learning.

The video chat included 24 students at the Academy of International Studies at Rosemont and students from various parts of China.

A translator was part of the conversation which allowed the students in Hampton Roads learn about coronavirus and the impact that COVID-19, which originated in Wuhan, China, has had in China and around the world.

Vivian and Tony live in China where they are quarantined at home.

Tony told their American counterparts, "Now, in the streets, there are no people.”

"Now, vegetables are very expensive,” said Vivian.

Doctor Harry Zhang coordinated the conversation to increase global understanding. He's the chairman of the Norfolk Sister Cities-Ningbo Committee and explained that the partnership made the video chat possible.

"What should we learn from your peers across the pacific?” said Zhang.

"I'm frustrated by the outbreak of the coronavirus, since thousands of people are suffering from it,” said Edward, as student.

The students in Norfolk, including 8th grader Diamoni Daivs, said they take the lesson to heart.

"We need to think about this more internationally. Everyone's affected by this, and we should feel for them,” said Davis.

"We are united together. We are like family. No matter which country we are from. So, cheers for China cheers for all of us,” said Joy.
