COVID-19 cases increase in Virginia after holiday travel, experts worry surge on the way

NORFOLK, Va. — There was an increase in COVID-19 cases in Virginia following Thanksgiving travel this year.

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reported over 3,600 new COVID-19 cases over the last week, up about 100 from the previous week. VDH also reported 3 COVID-related deaths.

Respiratory viruses were already on the rise ahead of the holiday season. 

Experts are worried that hospitals will see a spike in cases over the coming weeks due to increased indoor gatherings and a lag in vaccinations against viruses.

To help prevent getting sick and getting others sick, doctors recommend wearing masks in crowded areas like airports, avoiding gatherings when sick and washing hands often.
