Local woman helps create Regina King's Oscar-winning look

Virginia Beach's Nakoya Yancey designed the wig that Oscar winner Regina King wore to the award show.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The 91st annual academy awards are officially in the books.

Quite a few winners have ties to Hampton Roads, including Regina King who had help from a Virginia Beach resident with her look.

Here’s a fun fact about the Best Supporting Actress. The hair King donned on Oscar night was created by Virginia Beach’s own Nakoya Yancey.

"I sent her two wigs. Her hairstylist Niecey was like, 'She wore the wig. What did you think? Of course, she wore the wig.' And I was like oh my gosh, oh my gosh,” said Yancey.

Yancey mastered her wig making skills in England and soon took her talents to Hollywood. She's traveled to New York and other parts of the country to work on tv and movies sets. Her next project includes working on the set of the American television drama "Queen Sugar."

Yancey admitted the opportunity to work with King would not have been possible without her bosses.

“I’m so thankful and blessed that they saw something in me and took a chance on me because they didn’t know me I’m from Virginia," said Yancey.

The most notable Oscar winner for our area is Hampton University graduate Ruth Carter. She snagged a golden statue for Best Costume Design for "Black Panther."

The short film "Skin" won Best Live Action Short Film. It stars Zeus Campbell, a Norfolk native and Norfolk State University graduate.

Campbell said he appreciated the support and love his hometown has shown him.

“Virginia being behind me on this one makes me feel so, so, so significant. I’m just thankful,” said Campbell.

Glenn Close, a College of William & Mary graduate was nominated for Best Actress" for her role in "The Wife."
