Flying high above Hampton Roads: Nightingale

It's Nurse Appreciation Week. There's a special crew at Sentara: nurses who fly high above Hampton Roads in Nightingale.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- It's Nurse Appreciation Week. As we all know nurses do a lot for us when we aren't feeling well.

There's a special crew at Sentara: nurses who fly high above Hampton Roads in Nightingale.

Among the crew, decades of medical and flight training. Crews work in 12-hour shifts and before the day gets going they attend a briefing.

"I've lived in this area for 20 years, and I really worry about picking up people that I know personally," said nurse Maggie McCauley.

The love of the job fuels them.

"It's humbling to be able to help somebody, to get better, or to even hold their hand when they're dying," said Denise Baylous, Nightingale manager and nurse.

During this appreciation week their passion is especially highlighted.

Michelle Ocampo requested to shadow the team.

"I've been looking forward to this day the whole week because these people commit their whole lives to saving people's lives," she said.

These nurses are not just called registered nurses, they are specifically flight nurses, which requires chopper training too — 6 to 8 months of it.
