ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY, Va. (WVEC) -- A Hampton man will go to trial for the murder of a woman whose body was found nearly a year ago in Isle of Wight County.

A preliminary hearing was held in Isle of Wight General District court Thursday afternoon for 29-year-old Eric Saub in the death of a 25-year-old woman. The case was certified to a grand jury.

Saub is charged with murder in the death of 25-year-old Jean Marie Smith. Her body was found in the woods by hunters in Isle of Wight County on April 17, 2015.

Just days after Smith's body was found, Saub was arrested and charged in Hampton for crimes against Smith's grandmother. Those charges include identity theft and several counts of credit card forgery.

Investigators say Saub and Smith, who had been in the Navy, met online when he was still on the West Coast.

In Oregon, he has 17 criminal convictions for financial/identity-type frauds. He's wanted there on warrants involving fraud. Reports from Oregon media in 2007 said Saub was sentenced to three years in prison. Prosecutors said Saub worked at Best Buy and created a false purchase order to steal more than $50,000 worth of TVs, software and computers.
