Local 'Star Trek' club ending annual event after more than 20 years

After over 20 years, 'Starfleet Atlantic' is hosting its annual Star Trek-themed yard sale and cookout, one last time.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- For more than 20 years, local Star Trek fan club, 'Starfleet Atlantic,' has come together every summer for an annual yard sale and cookout.

It was a time for club members and other fans to buy, sell, and trade collectibles. The club has been together for about 40 years.

Throughout the years, members have aged, and the work required to put together the yard sale is becoming too much. This year will be its last.

"After so many years, we're all getting older, and we'd like to wrap it up... one final fling," said club president, Joy Dean.

One of the original members, Liz Albitz, said the club will still be together and have monthly meetings. But, she'll miss the annual yard sale.

"I'm a little sad about it because I enjoy the interaction," she said.

Dean said the role of social media now also factored into their decision. With everyone being connected online now, it's impacted people's need for in-person socialization like the yard sale provided.

The yard sale Saturday, May 26 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It'll be at Liz Albitz's house at 4844 Linshaw Lane in Virginia Beach.
