Hampton accepts applications for Housing Choice Voucher Program for first time since 2016

The program, also known as Section 8, helps very low-income families with rent subsidies paid to landlords in the private rental market.

HAMPTON, Va. — The Hampton Redevelopment & Housing Authority is accepting applications for the Housing Choice Voucher Program for the first time since 2016.

The applications are online only and will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. Saturday, May 13, according to the authority.

The program, also known as Section 8, helps very low-income families with rent subsidies paid to landlords in the private rental market. Those who participate in the program will typically pay 30% of their income toward rent, while the authority pays the rest.

Those who want to apply can do so through an application website. Once the application is submitted, the applicant will get a confirmation number that needs to be written down.

The numbers of those picked for the waiting list will only be displayed on the application website from May 29 to June 30.

5,000 applicant households will be picked to be placed on the waiting list through a random drawing. 95% of those placed on the waiting list will be households who qualify for the Housing Choice Voucher program's local lease-in-place or residency preference:

  • Local lease-in-place preference: The applicant has lived in Hampton for at least three months, and the property owner or manager is willing to participate in the program.
  • Residency preference: The applicant household has a head of household, co-head or spouse who either lives or works (20 hours or more weekly) in Hampton.

For more information about the program, visit the Hampton Redevelopment & Housing Authority's website.
