Hampton family of slain teen takes their message for change to Hampton City Hall

17-year-old Vic'Quan Newton died on Monday. Investigators said he was shot multiple times in a car.

HAMPTON, Va. — The family of slain teenager, Vic'Quan Newton, took their prayer for justice and an end to gun violence directly to Hampton City Hall on Friday.

His mother, Viccarra Coker, traveled from North Carolina to be there. She stood by Vic'Quan's friends, brother, and loved ones as she pleaded for her son's killer to come forward.

"Anyone who knows who killed my son... please keep in mind that if you don't share who killed my son, if you know, that it could easily be you in my place," said Coker.

Vic'Quan is the third teen to die in Hampton Roads from gun violence in less than a week.

Chesapeake Police found a 15-year-old teenager shot to death in an apartment complex on Sunday. Another 15-year-old died in the hospital in Portsmouth on Sunday morning.

A fourth teenager was shot in Virginia Beach off South Military Highway but is expected to survive.

"Four people shot and it's not even [the end of] January!" exclaimed Jason Taylor, a pastor with Revelation Church. "We need to get control of the situation as it's teenagers literally dying out on the streets."

Hampton police said someone shot Vic'Quan in his car multiple times on Michigan Drive on Monday night. Investigators believe Vic'Quan attempted to escape by driving away in his car, but he crashed into a ditch on Lasalle Avenue.

He later died from his injuries in the hospital.

"You did not have the right to take my child from me," said Coker. "We have been through enough, we have been through much more than the average person should endure."

Hampton Police have not arrested anyone in connection to Vic'Quan's death.

His family plans to hold a candlelight vigil on Monday at 6 p.m. at Hampton High School. Vic'Quan would have graduated from the school in the spring of 2024.
