Hampton police investigate shooting, 3-car crash

Two men were hurt, and one person took off after a a shooting and a three-car crash on Big Bethel Road in Hampton.

HAMPTON, Va. — One person is on the run after a shooting and multi-vehicle crash Monday morning in Hampton.

Hampton Police responded to a call of shots fired at 12:35 a.m. in the 1000 block of Big Bethel Road and discovered the three-car crash.

One man was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries from the crash.

Meanwhile, a second man walked into Riverside Hospital with a life-threatening gunshot wound. Doctors have listed him as stable.

Detectives have determined the car crash and the shooting are connected.

Police say the driver of the third vehicle involved in the crash fled the area prior to police's arrival.

It's unknown how the shooting victim arrived at the hospital.

"We are trying to figure out what happened," said Hampton Police Corporal Ashley Jenrette. "It's still very early on so the motive and circumstances surrounding it are under investigation."

Officers reassured the surrounding community is not in danger, but nearby resident Caleb Good said he feels "kind of shocked."

"Me personally, I'm not scared. But I know they're going to be people scared," he said.

The scene happened right in front of David Purdham's home, and the scene came to an end in his front yard. Purdham was getting ready to go to sleep when he heard the gun go off.

“I heard pow, pow, pow, pow, about five shots,” Purdham said. “Then five seconds later I heard the sound of vehicles hitting, crunch.”

Pamela Gregory also heard the chaos next door. She said friends called her all morning to make sure she was okay.

“One guy ran down the sidewalk bleeding and another got in another car and took off,” Gregory said. “It is scary to know people are running from cars and have guns and they could be anywhere.”

Many, like Purdham, are relieved because they know it couldn't end much worse for people living on Big Bethel Road.

“We're very lucky nothing came inside the house because we're that close,” Purdham said.
