One dead after shooting in Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- Detectives are trying to find the person or people responsible for a shooting early Tuesday morning that left one person dead.

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- Detectives are trying to find the person or people responsible for a shooting early Tuesday morning that left one person dead.

Emergency dispatchers received a call about gunfire near Quash Street and Foley Street at 1:59 a.m.

Police got to the area and found Jerrod Montrell Brown, 30, in the roadway who had been shot. He died there.

Tuesday morning, Brown’s mother Joyce Brown got the phone call no mother ever wants to get.

She woke up to a voicemail saying something happened to her son Jerrod. She called him twice, but didn’t get an answer. Moments later, detectives were knocking at her door with the heartbreaking news.

“The detective told me Jerrod had been in an incident and he didn't make it,” Brown says. “I knew what that meant so I didn't go any further with my questions.”

Brown says her son had one daughter who was like his twin.

“He knew a lot of people and a lot of people loved Jerrod,” Brown says.

However, Brown does have a troubled past.

In 2015 he was charged with Voluntary Manslaughter after a fight which resulted in the death of Andrew Frank Dibona. Investigators say Brown stabbed Dibona during the altercation.

Brown says her son was trying to change his life following that incident.

A gofundme has been set up for Brown, which you can find here.
