Newport News man sentenced over 6 year after being stopped with gun, drugs and unrestrained child in car

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A Newport News man has been sentenced to over six years for drugs and weapons charges.

Daquan Montreal Lane, 29, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute heroin and fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine; possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime; and being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. He was sentenced to six years and six months in prison.

According to court documents, on Sept. 9, 2022, Lane was spotted by Newport News police driving with a seven-year-old not properly restrained. When officers conducted a traffic stop, they saw a knotted, plastic bag of suspected narcotics sticking out of Lane's pocket. 

After investigating, officers found and seized a gun in the driver's side door. They removed Lane from the car and several more plastic bags fell out of his pocket. 

NNPD recovered bags containing 8.37 grams of a mixture of heroin and fentanyl, 4.69 grams of a mixture of heroin and fentanyl, 8.19 grams of methamphetamine, 4.71 grams of cocaine and a flip phone.

Police say after they conducted a search of the car they found a loaded 9mm semiautomatic handgun, two digital scales with narcotics residue, a cell phone, and about 140 grams of marijuana in 12 separate bags.

In 2013, Lane was convicted of shooting at an occupied building, attempted malicious wounding, two counts of use/display of a firearm during the commission of a felon and reckless handling of a firearm. As a convicted felon, Lane could not legally possess a firearm or ammunition.
