Newport News is excited to host its annual One City Marathon

The Newport News One City Marathon is on Sunday, March 3 at 7 a.m.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Newport News One City Marathon is being held this weekend. It is a point-to-point marathon distance race that spans the entire length of Newport News, Virginia. 

The course is full of scenic views of the Virginia peninsula's parks and waterways, historical neighborhoods, and finishes in the downtown area, home to Newport News Shipbuilding.

The Newport News One City Marathon has a seven-hour time limit. This translates to 16 minutes per-mile pace requirement for participants. Runners must reach the following checkpoints at the times listed:

#1-Mile 13.1 at 10:30 a.m.

#2- Mile 18 at 11:45 a.m.

#3- Mile 23 at 1:10 p.m.

Marathon participants receive a long-sleeved technical shirt, custom finishes medals, personalized bib, The One City Marathon MyLaps RFID chip technology attached to the bib, and complimentary runner food and beer for runners 21 and over.

The One City Marathon is a USA Track & Field Certified Course and Boston Qualifier. 

Water stations will be located every two miles along the marathon route. Huma Gels will be provided at Water Station #14) and #10 (Mile 20.) Gatorade will be provided at every other Water Station beginning with Water Station #2.

A portable toilet will be provided at every water station.

All runners must be at least 18 years old. Participants must attend packet pickup to receive their bib and race shirt.

The marathon is expected to bring hundreds of runners, spectators, and guests to downtown Newport News on Saturday, March 2, and Sunday, March 3.

Drivers can expect traffic delays and congestion around the shipyard due to street closures that intersect with the race route. 

Streets and roads around the shipyard that will be closed over the weekend include:

-25th Street from Washington Avenue to West Avenue from 8 a.m. Saturday to 8 p.m. Sunday.

-42nd Street from Huntington Avenue to Washington Avenue from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

-Washington Avenue from 42nd to 25th streets from 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Parking will be restricted along portions of Huntington and Washington avenues as well as numbered streets in that area from as early as Friday to Sunday afternoon. Those areas include:

-Huntington Avenue from 57th to 42nd streets from 6 p.m. Saturday to 3 p.m. Sunday.

-Washington Avenue from 44th to 25th Streets from 6 p.m. Saturday to 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

-42nd Street from Huntington Avenue to Washington Avenue from 6 p.m. Saturday to 3 p.m. Sunday.

-26th Street from Washington Avenue to West Avenue from 6 p.m. Friday to 3 p.m. Sunday.

-25th Street from Washington Avenue to West Avenue from 8 a.m. Friday to 8 p.m. Sunday.
