NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — To commemorate one of the largest seaborne invasions in history, The Mariners’ Museum and Park will host various programming in recognition of the 75th Anniversary of D-Day this summer.
Seventy-five years ago on June 6, 1994, the Western allies launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France, to free Europe from Nazi Germany’s control. That day became a defining moment of the 20th century, as it changed the course of World War II.
So, The Mariners' Museum will be hosting various programs on Thursday, June 6 and Saturday, June 8.
During the two days, Museum staff and costumed interpreters will be in the galleries to talk about the timeline of events, the strategy involved, military effort, and outcome of the conflict.
Visitors will also get the opportunity to learn more about this iconic event through photographs taken during the invasion, maps detailing the scale of the assault, reading first-hand accounts from the men who were there, listening to radio broadcasts from that day, and even make remembrance poppies.
There will also be a 3D movie about the invasion in the Explorers Theater for an additional fee.
