Driver killed in suspected DUI crash in Norfolk's Downtown Tunnel

A Chesapeake woman was heading east in the westbound lanes when she hit an oncoming vehicle, killing that driver instantly, VSP says.

NORFOLK, Va. — A 43-year-old woman is dead after a head-on collision with a suspected drunk driver in the Downtown Bridge Tunnel in Norfolk early Saturday morning, Virginia State Police announced.

The collision happened at around 3:15 a.m. when authorities say Dominique Goodwin, 27, of Chesapeake, was traveling east in her Volkswagen Tiguan in the westbound lanes, leading her to crash into an oncoming Chevrolet Equinox.

The Equinox driver, Shelby Riddick-Walker of Portsmouth, suffered fatal injuries, VSP said.

Goodwin was taken to a hospital with injuries but is expected to survive.

Friends of Walker, who's also known as Lex, was well-known for her involvement with the LGBT community in Hampton Roads, often hosting events.

37th and Zen, a local club where she worked at, shared a statement following her death. They said, "We are beyond heartbroken with the tragedy that has occurred, however, we can all hear you say stop crying and keep living."

Investigators determined alcohol contributed to the crash and said charges against Goodwin are pending. The investigation is ongoing.
