City of Norfolk looking to hire an artist as part of 'Artist in Residence' program

Norfolk hopes to hire an artist as part of a new Artist-in-Residence program to help city employees think more creatively and weave a new artistic spirit into city government.

Norfolk, Va. (WVEC) — Norfolk is looking to hire an artist as part of a new Artist-in-Residence program.

Pete Buryk of the City Manager’s Office said it’s an innovative opportunity for city employees to take a creative approach to problem-solving.

“We want to be the most creative city and most creative group of public servants that we can be. We feel like by bringing in an artist to be part of city staff and to kind of learn our people, our projects, our processes and help us think more creatively, we can signal that we value innovation and creative thinking and the arts overall,” said Buryk.

The artist will serve a 10-12-month term through the 2019 calendar year. The City is looking for artists from a range of artistic methods like, media, and outcomes are possible, including art installations, performances, publications, video, or storytelling.

The artist will work with city employees to reimagine aspects of civic life, stimulate outside-the-box thinking and weave artistic spirit into city government. The artist will also serve as an advisor on planning for major projects, ensuring that art is considered and integrated into the project.

The artist will have a desk in City Hall and be offered at least a $35,000 salary plus housing at a 2-bedroom, 2 bath waterside cottage on the Norfolk Botanical Garden’s grounds.

Candidates have until December 1, 2018 to apply.
