Fascist, pro-Nazi flyers posted at Old Dominion University

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Old Dominion University police officers are investigating after flyers that appear to be recruiting Nazis showed up on campus this past weekend.

Student newspaper The Mace & Crown said that someone posted the literature on maglev poles between the Engineering Systems and Education Buildings.

The Mace & Crown said a student took one of the flyers to show to a professor.

Another student who was in the professor's class told the newspaper about the flyers which read:

Old Dominion University -- You have been visited by the AtomWaffen Division. Join your local Nazis! Find us at ironmarch.org.

They also featured a crown on top of a swastika.

Iron March describes itself as "a global online fascist community."

Staff members from The Mace & Crown checked all the maglev poles and a number of academic buildings in the area. They found only two spots where flyers had been posted. Traces of one still stuck to one of the poles when 13News Now was on campus Monday night.

"This is a diverse campus, and you wouldn't expect something like this to happen," said freshman Chaunci Hannibal. "I mean, you've got so many different nationalities, ethnicities, and people should be more open instead of trying to form a group like that."

"Pretty ignorant, simple-minded," said Hannibal's boyfriend who was visiting her. "I don't really appreciate, especially me being a black teenager. I don't appreciate someone posting a picture of a Monarch Nazi cult."

Sophomore Marquis Hawkes told 13News Now he didn't take the message of the flyers seriously.

"I just took it as kind of like a joke," Hawkes explained. "You know, college kids, they joke all the time, so it wasn't anything that much to me."

Graduate student Ashish Tamhane said, "It's always bad, you know, something like this, racist, Nazi things are always bad, so whatever you say, you know, this shouldn't be done. Simple as that."

Ellen Neufeldt, Vice President for Student Engagement and Enrollment Services, provided this statement Monday night:

ODU police have been notified and are actively investigating. The University community is proud of its diversity and stands united in denouncing acts intended to create divisiveness.
