Group hopes to fix stray cat problem at Naval Station Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Stray cats have become a large problem at Naval Station Norfolk.

An estimated 100 abandoned, stray or feral cats currently live in the wild on the world's largest naval base, many near the rocks along Willoughby Bay, near the Iowa Point and USS Cole monuments.

The Norfolk Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and a group of volunteers have come to an agreement to help the unowned animals living on the naval base.

The group calls itself 'Cat Team 7'. Founder Caitlyn Mcintosh is a Marine Corps wife, and lives in nearby Naval Support Activity. "There's so many things people can take up the torch for, and I felt that cats are underserved in a way," she said.

The group hopes to capture and neuter the animals, give them rabies shots, and relocate them. The agreement was reached in April, and the humane trappings began this month. There is no specific timetable for completion. The hope is, as soon as possible.

If you have any interest in giving one of these cats a forever home, you can contact Cat Team 7 at (571) 423-9200 or email the group at catteam7norfolk@gmail.com
