7-year-old girl in critical condition after being hit by car in Norfolk

According to NPD, it happened around 5:20 p.m. The victim's injuries are life-threatening. The driver remained at the scene, police say.

NORFOLK, Va. — A 7-year-old girl was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a crash on Tuesday, the Norfolk Police Department confirmed.

According to NPD, it happened around 5:20 p.m. in the 1700 block of Church Street.

The initial investigation revealed that the driver of a car was traveling when the child entered the street and was hit.

The child's family identified the girl as Na'Zurya Shead, but her family calls her "Yaya." Her mother said the girl asked if she could walk across the street to go get a treat with her cousins.

"I just pray she get better, and she can continue to be a little girl again and not have her life be messed up or over because someone chose to speed down the street," said Laquanda Shead, Yaya's mother.

It's not clear how the crash happened, but Yaya's cousins raced back to Laquanda's house to tell her what happened. She said she arrived to find her daughter in the middle of the street, while someone gave her CPR.

"I just wanted to bring my baby home," said Laquanda. "I don't know if she's going to be okay or not."

The 7-year-old girl was transported to the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters with life-threatening injuries, including a brain bleed and spine injury.

The driver remained at the scene, and it's unclear how fast they traveled or if they will face any charges. The investigation is still ongoing.
