Police: Man shot, killed in Norfolk shooting is city's first homicide of 2019

40-year-old Lorenzo Antwoine Roberts was pronounced dead at the scene.

NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk police are investigating a shooting that left one person dead Saturday night, police said.

The call came in around 10:43 p.m. in the 2600 block of Ballentine Boulevard.

Officers found 40-year-old Lorenzo Antwoine Roberts of Chesapeake outside of a home suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting occurred just yards from the shelter, Outreach for Christ. The company’s COO, Tammy Savola, said that any violence is unnecessary.

“It breaks our heart because we know the heart of this community. We’ve got to get to our youth and let them know there’s a better way,” said Savola.

Savola said that if anyone is in need of help, they are always welcome in the shelter.

“Our door is always open, people knock on our door all hours of the day and night, so we have to actively participate in changing their outlook on their future,” said Savola.

Police have not released any other details in this investigation.

This is Norfolk's first homicide of the year.
