'Suspicious' man in custody after entering St. Pius X Catholic School

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Police are questioning a man who appeared to have no business at a Catholic elementary school when he walked into it Tuesday.

The man entered St. Pius X Catholic School, located at 7800 Halprin Drive, where a staff member confronted him.

A school employee called police. Officers took the man into custody and to their police operations center where they questioned him.

Deborah Cox, Director of Communications for the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, provided this statement to 13News Now:

On Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2016, staff at Saint Pius X Catholic School notified Norfolk police regarding an incident that occurred prior to the start of the school day.

A man entered the school and based on interaction with staff, police were called. Since police are now investigating, all inquiries should be directed to the Norfolk Police Department reference the investigation.

The school has sent a brief statement to parents notifying our school community about what occurred this morning.

Detectives said they are not making a connection between this incident and a similar one that took place at Mary Calcott Elementary School on September 9.
