Documents reveal 19-year-old woman planned to kill Portsmouth man at work

Court documents alleged the woman arrived at the Valvoline on Frederick Boulevard with a plan to kill 23-year-old Benjamin Nesbitt and then herself.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Portsmouth court documents reveal more about a shooting in broad daylight that left 23-year-old Benjamin Nesbitt dead at his job.

According to the documents, 19-year-old Ahleesha Sykes showed up at the Valvoline on Frederick Boulevard in Portsmouth on February 9 with a plan to kill Nesbitt and then herself.

A nearby Portsmouth police officer heard gunshots around 2:30 in the afternoon. The documents say when the officer got to the Valvoline, they saw a woman running away from the store with a gun in her hand.

The officer chased and arrested Sykes while other officers found Nesbitt with multiple gunshot wounds inside the business.

Sykes allegedly told the officer, “He was going to hurt me, I shot him.”

She is accused of shooting Nesbitt twice in the stomach while he was sitting in his car and twice in the back while he ran into the building. Despite police initially saying Nesbitt suffered non-life-threatening injuries, he ultimately died at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth during surgery.

Police have called this a domestic-related shooting, saying the two knew each other although it's not clear how they were connected.

In her interview with Portsmouth Police detectives, the documents reveal Sykes said she went to find Nesbitt at work, where she planned to kill him and then herself.

Sykes is charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and shooting in the commission of a felony.
