One man dead, another hurt in overnight shooting in Portsmouth

Around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, police say they received word of a walk-in gunshot victim and say another had succumbed to his injuries.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Portsmouth Police Department said a man has died and another is injured following a shooting in the early morning hours of Wednesday.

Around 12:30 a.m., police said they received word of a walk-in gunshot victim at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center. They arrived to find 37-year-old Johnny Burden suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound and 34-year-old Jermone Hunter with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

Burden later died at the hospital.  Hunter is still being treated for his injuries.

A vehicle parked in front of the entrance was seen riddled with bullet holes and had shattered windows.

“I’m hurt," said Yvonne, who told 13News Now she's the mother of Johnny Burden. "I’m lost.”

She is in pain and disbelief after learning someone shot her son in Portsmouth.

“I gotta see for myself, this is unbelievable,” she said.

Yvonne said her sister, Shelia Burden, informed her of the shooting.

“To get a phone call to say that your son is dead, that’s just devastating,” Yvonne said.

Burden said before she called her sister, a friend called her saying someone shot her nephew early Wednesday morning.

“They just told me that they heard that someone had shot him at a bar or something.”

Burden stood outside the hospital with other family members shattered by the death of their loved one.

“He was a good person," Burden said. "I’m really going to miss him. That was my heart. It really broke my heart.”

Yvonne said Johnny was her only son and that she's hurt, frustrated, and left with several questions.

“Did it happen inside of the car?" she asked. "Did somebody shoot in the car or was the shooter in the car? I just need answers. I don’t have a son now but I have to have closure.”

Yvonne said her son was the father of a 6-month-old, with triplets on the way.

Police have not released any other details or suspect information.
