PORTSMOUTH, Va. — An early-morning crash on the Western Freeway in Portsmouth reportedly began as an armed robbery in Suffolk.

According to Suffolk Police, officers were called to the Hampton Roads Crossing Apartments in the 5000 block of Boynton Place around midnight. A man told police he had been approached by several other men, ranging from their teens to early 20's. One of the men pulled out a handgun and demanded the victim's money.

The suspects took the victim's black Infiniti G37 and fled the apartment complex, hitting a parked vehicle as they left.

The victim was unhurt.

About an hour later, the car was found crashed on the eastbound Western Freeway (VA-164), just before the West Norfolk Bridge. All of the suspects had fled the scene before police had arrived.
