Fiery crash in Suffolk sends 2 drivers to hospital

Officials said one vehicle had struck a tree and caught fire while the other had gone into a nearby field.

SUFFOLK, Va. — A crash in Suffolk that caused one vehicle to go up in flames sent two people to the hospital Sunday afternoon, officials said.

The two-vehicle crash on Pruden Boulevard near Northfield Drive at around 12:40 p.m. prompted a response from Suffolk Fire & Rescue and Suffolk police.

Officials said one vehicle had struck a tree and caught fire while the other had gone into a nearby field.

Both drivers had made it out of their vehicles but required medical help. One of the drivers was airlifted to the hospital with "critical injuries. The other driver, who was taken to the hospital via ambulance, suffered serious injuries but is expected to survive.

The crash temporarily closed Pruden Boulevard between Route 58 and Northfield Drive.

No details about what led up to the crash have been released at this time. The crash remains under investigation.
