One person dead, another hurt after shooting at Happy Shopper in Suffolk

Evidence markers filled the parking lot of the Happy Shopper convenience store on East Washington Street where two people were shot.

SUFFOLK, Va. — Police officers said one person died after a shooting Tuesday afternoon at the Happy Shopper convenience store on East Washington Street.

Suffolk police identified the man killed as Leondrae Shaqil Johnson, 25, of Suffolk.

A second person remains in the hospital with injuries. Police identified him as Antonio Lamon Jefferson Jr., 23, of Suffolk.

Sanjay Patel, owner of the Happy Shopper convenience store said he was behind the counter helping a customer when he heard gunshots.

"It was like machine guns, 'bam bam bam bam,'" said Patel.

Patel said shots were fired from multiple sides. One man went down while another man who was shooting got into an SUV with one other person.

Patel said innocent bystanders were pumping gas, his customers quickly got away.

"I hid. I ran away. Once it stopped, I went over there to see what happened," said Patel.

Outside, Patel saw a man's body on the ground.

"It was just a scary scenario because it never happened here before," said Patel.

On Wednesday, Tony Bryant, one of his customers, was shocked.

"Wow, in broad daylight? The younger generation doesn’t care now. They don’t care about your life [or] my life," said Bryant.

While Patel was still a bit shaken up on Wednesday, he said things could have turned out much worse.

"Good thing it wasn’t inside, otherwise it would be a different story," said Patel.

Surveillance cameras from Happy Shopper and nearby businesses captured the incident. The video was turned over to Suffolk police.

Bishop A.S. Hall, Sr. was at the church just yards away from the shooting. He said everyone loses when it comes to violence.

"Because whoever passed away actually has loved ones that will miss them, and it hurts everybody - lives are at play," said Hall.

City of Suffolk spokeswoman Diana Klink said emergency dispatchers received a call about the shooting at 4:10 p.m. The store is located at 600 East Washington.

Several evidence markers were outside the business, and it appeared that at least one car at the gas pumps had been hit by bullets.
