Volunteers help repair Gold Star mother's home

Volunteers came to a Suffolk Gold Star mother's house to give the home a full-scale renovation.

SUFFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Dozens of people are volunteering their time to help a Suffolk a mother whose son paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Carrie Caldwell is a Gold Star mom. Her son, Corporal Jonathan Matthew Williams, died in the Gulf War in 1991. He was 23-years-old.

Volunteers are now helping out to renovate her home in a single day.

"It just tore me up when I lost him. He was out for six months, and he was called back. And he had just got there, and he was in the barracks that was hit," said Caldwell.

Caldwell's home needs a lot of work. Alexandra Serrano with the Hampton Roads Realtors Association, brought several groups together to volunteer their time, including contractor Phil Casone.

"Today what we're doing for her is replacing all the flooring throughout the house, giving her a complete kitchen remodel, doing sheetrock repairs, painting the whole house," said Casone.

They also updated the electrical and plan on returning to do windows. It's a project that could easily cost $50,000. But for Caldwell, it's free of charge.

Caldwell said her son is looking down smiling.

"He would be very happy, because that's all he talked about is when he got out he was gonna help his momma."
