Man pleads guilty to murder of stepdaughter's boyfriend in Virginia Beach

Police have a person in custody as they investigate the shooting on Chimney Hill Parkway.

UPDATE 4/28/14- 57-year-oldErnest Steven Croft has entered a guilty plea to first degree murder and firearms charges on Monday. Judge Stephen Mahan sentenced him to 48 years in prison with 23 years of that sentence suspended. Police say Croft admitted to shooting John Gancarz, who was the boyfriend of Croft's stepdaughter.

*Update: Police charged 57-year-old Ernest Steven Croft of the 2100 block of North Street in Portsmouth with first degree murder and use of a firearm. He is currently being held without bond in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center.

VIRGINIA BEACH-Va. Beach Police say a man is dead and a person is in custody following a shooting in the Chimney Hill area.

Officers responded to reports of shots being fired in the 800 block of Chimney Hill Parkway around 6:40 a.m.

'They arrived and found him on the ground in a yard of one of the single-family homes,' police spokeswoman Tonya Borman told WVEC.com.

Police did not have information about the circumstances of the shooting and didn't have information about the victim or the person they're questioning.

Posts on the WVEC13 Facebook page alerted us to the situation about that same time.

'There are cop cars all over the place on Chimney Hill Parkway,' wrote Jeremy Clinard.

'Does anyone know what's going on this morning in the Chimney Hill Section of VB? Flares are on the road and cops galore, Shannon Sigman added

When we got information from police and posted it, Leigh Ann Almos wrote, 'I was headed to work. I saw Chimney Hill blocked off both directions by police cruisers and crime scene tape around a house. I wanted to stop, but I would of been late for work. Thanks for following up on this.'

A man who lives in the area said he heard the gunfire and went to investigate. He thinks he ran into the gunman.

'Heard gunshots. Ran downstairs. There's a guy walking very calmly around with what I thought was a duffel bag,' he said. 'I made eye contact with him a couple times and I saw that he had a pistol.'
