The Art of Being a Military Child opened at Lynnhaven Mall on Wednesday.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A special art exhibit is now on display in Virginia Beach!

The Art of Being a Military Child opened at Lynnhaven Mall on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. It highlights the artwork of students who come from military families.

The contest is open to all Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) students and this year, they received nearly 800 entries.

This is the 12th year for the exhibit.

The school division hosts the event in partnership with Lynnhaven Mall and military liaison officers at JEB Little Creek-Fort Story and NAS Oceana-Dam Neck.

VBCPS Superintendent Dr. Donald Robertson, Virginia Superintendent of Instruction Dr. Lisa Coons, senior leaders from each branch of military service and other dignitaries attended to recognize contest participants and award winners in a ceremony.

“Our more than 16,000 military-connected students represent families who protect freedom around the world, so the Month of the Military Child holds special meaning for us,”  VBCPS Superintendent Dr. Donald Robertson said. “I invite everyone to see how our students share their unique stories through their art and meet families who bring hope and security to our community, nation and world.”
